Welcome to the underground running fraternity. We are always seeking new members. All levels are welcome to join, and the initiation process is pretty painless.
When I am out on a run and I see a runner approaching in the opposite direction, I give them a quick scan and try to guess whether they are a fellow fraternity runner. I judge them by their apparel, pace, facial expression, gear, age and approach pattern. If I am certain that they are part of the runnerhood, I will gesture to them with one of the secret signals.
If it is not immediately clear, I will attempt to make eye contact - if it is not reciprocated, that is a sure sign they are not part of the 'hood, and we both keep running as if the other does not exist. If they exchange a friendly glance (but don't immediately gesture), I see it as a pledge to join, and I flash them a signal with the hope that they accept this initiation ritual. Some people do return the signal, while others look the other way to avoid the girl with the staring problem!
The secret signals are complicated and take some real skill and brainpower to execute. One involves raising your hand just slightly in the direction of the oncoming runner. The other one requires a second of sustained eye contact with a slight nod of the head. In a true exchange, each runner must offer one of these signals to the other.
Vermont seems to have a strong chapter of the runnerhood. I have heard inside reports that Austin Texas has a very weak chapter - maybe because it is more like a northeast city in the middle of Southern Hospitality. Boston - well, the runners who aren't pushing you out of the way or hip checking you as they pass may offer a slight wave or nod - although probably with a little bit of attitude entwined in it.
So, keep an eye out for runners looking to offer a simple wave or head nod in your direction - and you can become a part of an expansive society of runners. It feels good to make a connection with someone else who is also sweating and working hard out on the roads and trails.
